From bone loss to space anemia, biology remains a formidable barrier to long-duration spaceflight. The Genes in Space program empowers young scientists by inviting students to design DNA experiments that directly address these challenges. The Journal of Emerging Investigators, an open-access journal for middle and high school student research, has highlighted the work of our 2025 Genes in Space finalists.

These students worked tirelessly, transforming their initial ideas into polished academic papers. Their five proposals, representing the top five submissions in this year's competition, span diverse and critical biological topics. A big thank you to the teachers and mentors who supported their hard work. Read their published abstracts here.
