Genes in Space is open to students in grades 7-12 who attend schools located within the United States. Immediate family members of persons employed by Boeing, miniPCR bio, New England Biolabs, or the ISS U.S. National Lab may not participate in Genes in Space.

JUDGING

Your submission will be judged by a panel of scientists and thought leaders on the creative and scientific merit of your experimental idea, as well as your ability to communicate the impact and importance of this work.

  • The proposal relates to an open question or challenge relevant to space biology.
  • The proposal has a clear rationale for why the experiment must be conducted aboard the International Space Station.
  • The space biology question or challenge is best explored using molecular biology methods, and a specific molecular/genetic target has been identified for investigation.
  • The hypothesis or research goal is clear and well-reasoned.
  • The experimental plan is clear and actionable.
  • The experimental design makes sensible use of the Genes in Space Toolkit.
  • The proposal communicates ideas clearly and convincingly.
  • The proposal does not violate the guidelines on acceptable use of A.I.
